Domain Renewal

Note: Thanks to my friends who have filled out a survey for me. This round, I got to know my friends better. Some are very cautious before answering; some asked nothing but directly returned a filled survey; some picked up errors from the survey doc; some are so worried how the reward will be delivered etc. Anyway, thanks guys!

Last year, I registered a domain with Register.com for 1-year FREE. Needless to ask, the domain is HAANISM.COM, the page you are viewing right now.

Did that just for fun and new trial, as people commented that my URL is hyper hard to remember. It spent me quite some time to get all the configurations right! (now I totally forget what have I changed)

One year later, I was prompted that my domain is going to expire. Seeing the $$ I have to pay for renewal, it really shocked me - US$35/year!!!

Sooooooooo expensive. US$35 is almost RM120, although that means only about 30 cents (Ringgit Malaysia) a day.

Not to renew and use back the old criticised URL?

Not to renew and change the criticised URL to an easier to remember one?

CANNOT!! I've got 200+ posts and there are hyperlinks within the posts. If I were to do any of the above, the effort to scan through, amend and test the many posts and hyperlinks is huge.

So I asked my webmaster friend, Binh, if he has any suggestion. He provided me some advices and finally I targeted to transfer to godaddy.com, that charges only US$6.99 per year.

Then, I read through the procedures required to transfer a domain. First of all, I need to obtain an authorization code from register.com, by calling them at US, during their specified working hours (night time in Malaysia). BTW, I got to know from other's experience that, we would get hold for at least 5 minutes on the phone to listen to their ads, telling you how good is register.com.

I've procrastinated for quite some time then only I took action on 27/10/2008 night. It was true that I was forced to listen to their ads while waiting for someone to attend to me, after the call was picked up. After that, I was asked to verify my personal details. The funniest thing is the Security Question I had to answer - what's the first and last letters of the name of your first boy/girl friend?

Normally I won't set a silly question like this, but I think option was not given to set/choose other questions. I answered with hesitation... and luckily I got the question right!

After verification and some conversations (he asked me why I wanna transfer, tranfer to which registrar, at what price etc), the staff from register.com offered me a better price, which is US$7.95/year. I didn't want to spend too much time on the call so I asked him to send me an email clearly stating the offer (I called using my mobile to US).

Though still slightly more expensive than godaddy, finally I chose to stay with register.com, taking their 3-year offer (US$23.85). 5-year is too long whilst 1-year is too short. So now, the next time I have to worry about domain transfer is the few months before 23/12/2011.

I wonder where am I at that time?

Those who understand me well would have known, I do not like to get attached to anything. Even when staying outside I'd choose homestay, so that everything is included and I need not worry about all the phone, electricity, water supply accounts - can say bye and leave anytime!

This round, can't believe that I'm attached to a domain!! I think it worths the money. What do you think?

Lesson learned: When you feel something is not reasonable, do not just say YES and obey. Try to voice and find another selection, you might get the surprise!
