My 8D7N Bali Itinerary

If you used to plan your travel itinerary, you'd know it's not easy. Though people say, plans always lag behind changes (计划赶不上变化 - pardon my own translation), having no plan at all will just waste your time, without knowing where to go or what to do upon arrival.

Could just pray that everything would be all right!

I always plan my own itinerary as I do not like to follow tours. Therefore, this round, Wooi Yee and I also did a lot of studies before the trip. Honestly, she did more than me as I was too busy at work.

Bali is not too big, but yet not too small. Local tour guide will say, you just need 3 days, as they bring you to the typical tourist destinations. We planned our trip according to our preference. For the typical stuff that we don't like, we skip.

Share with you the itinerary. Perhaps it could serve as a reference, if you are going to Bali, and have the same preferences or intentions as us.

Day One - 16 May 2009 (Sat)

Flew from KL at 9:50am by Malaysia Airlines. Touched down at 12:50pm. There is no time difference between Bali and Malaysia.

Bomb Monument Bali

Checked in to Simpang Inn. Walked around Legian, Poppies and Kuta areas, looking at some other accommodations and transport services.

At night, took dinner at Warung Made.

Taxi from airport - USD 5.50
Simpang Inn - USD 25 per night, for a 3-people room.
Warung Made - USD 17.60, for 3 people

Note: USD 1 is equivalent to 10,000 Rupiah.

Day Two - 17 May 2009 (Sun)

Toured around with Yik, a driver from Sanura. He brought us to visit:
  • Batubulan - supposed to watch Barong dance here. However, we left coz the 1-hour show had started for 15 minutes. Admission is 80,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Batik Collection (Sari Amerta) at Batubulan. Free admission.

  • Art Shop Galuh - for us to buy Batik, but we enjoyed the photo taking session more. Free admission. Explore the place, it's beautiful inside.

  • Stone Carving

  • Gold and Silver Production (Yatra Gallery) at Singapadu.

  • Wood Carving (Sila Gallery) at Mas.

  • Art Glass Manufacture (Focus Design).

  • Denpasar Monument & Museum - nice place but rarely frequented by tourists. Admission is just 10,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Dreamland - just take photos outside. Did not go inside due to lack of time.

  • Uluwatu - the holy temple at the southern part of Bali with Kecak dance and spectacular sunset. Admission is 3,000 Rupiah/pax (inclusive of Sarong). To watch the Kecak dance, need to pay 50,000 Rupiah/pax.

Transport rental with guide - USD 25, inclusive of all parking fees.
Simpang Inn - USD 25 per night, for a 3-people room.

Day Three - 18 May 2009 (Mon)

Toured around with Nyoman, Putu's friend. We went to:
  • Kuta Beach - short photo taking session only, before leaving Kuta.

  • Tanah Lot - admission is 10,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Taman Ayun Temple - admission is 3,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Ulun Danu Bratan Temple & Bratan Lake at Bedugul (on the mountain) - admission is 10,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Very misty.

  • Gitgit Waterfall - skipped as it was raining very heavily.

We passed by Singraja and reached Lovina, the black volcanic sand beach. Stayed overnight at Bayu Mantra.

It was a good day for Balinese to have cremation. On the way, we saw several ceremonies. We actually stopped by one and took photos. Cremation spent Balinese the most money, compared to wedding and new-born babies.

Transport rental with guide - USD 35, NOT inclusive of all parking fees (not aware of this while booking). Anyway, the parking fees that day were just 11,000 Rupiah. Also paid another 40,000 Rupiah for the driver to stay overnight at Lovina. Total goes to USD 40.10.

Bayu Mantra - USD 8 per night, for 2 people. There is no room for 3 persons.

Day Four - 19 May 2009 (Tue)

Dolphin watching in the morning. Then, we left Lovina to the following places:
  • Kintamani (on the mountain) - to view the magnificent panorama of Mount Batur volcano and Lake Batur. Admission is 5,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Mount Batur on the left, Lake Batur on the right. Weather was not really good that day.

  • Coffee tasting and oleh-oleh (souvenir) shopping.

  • Tampaksiring, the Holy Spring Water Temple (Tirta Empul) - admission is 6,000 Rupiah/pax.

  • Goa Gajah - admission is 6,000 Rupiah/pax.

Reached Ubud, checked in to Dewi Ayu. Looked for transports to Tulamben on the next day.

At night, had dinner at Bebek Bengil (Dirty Duck).

Dolphin watching - USD 9 per person, after 10% discount.
Transport rental with guide plus parking fees - USD 35.50
Dewi Ayu - USD 25 per night, for a 3-people room, after my hard bargain.
Dinner at Bebek Bengil - USD 13.80, for 3 people.

Day Five - 20 May 2009 (Wed)

Were on the way to Tulamben. After half an hour's journey, I suggested perhaps we should cancel the plan, coz I bet I would not be able to dive even we reach Tulamben. Then we better don't waste the time and money to go there. The journey took 2.5 hours one-way.

Therefore, we returned to Ubud and canceled the transport booking made previously for 2 days. Returned to Dewi Ayu. Went to see doctor, then I slept in the room for the whole day. Ate only medicine and plain bread.

Canceled transportation - USD 15. (BIG sorry to my travel mates)

Dewi Ayu - USD 24 per night, for a 3-people room. A little cheaper than the first day as we were going to stay for 3 more days there.

Doctor - USD 45, only for consultation. Medicine and prescription were not included. I could not afford the rest.

Day Six - 21 May 2009 (Thu)

Felt much better, could ride motorcycle and bring a passenger already.

Went to Tegallalang (terraced paddy field), Ubud Market, Ubud Palace, had Babi Guling as lunch, went to ARMA Museum (admission is 25,000 Rupiah/pax), Kedewatan (Ayung River and terraced paddy field) and shopped around.

I drove Wooi Yee. She gave instructions about where to turn.

Tegallalang terraced paddy field.

Kedewatan terraced paddy fields.

Motorcycle rental - USD 3 per motorcycle. We rented two.
Fuel for motorcycles - USD 0.90
Babi Guling Lunch - USD 10.50
Dewi Ayu - USD 24 per night, for a 3-people room.

Day Seven - 22 May 2009 (Fri)

Woke up with a very good mood. Had an early swim at the swimming pool. For the day, we walked around for shopping, and had 3-hour SPA at Jelatik!!

Dewi Ayu - USD 24 per night, for a 3-people room.
My SPA (Balinese massage, Aloevera facial and cream treatment) - USD 25.50

Day Eight - 23 May 2009 (Sat)

Simple walk around in the morning, checked out and headed to the Ngurah Rai airport (USD 18 by private transport). Bye Bali.

All my moolah are also gone.

Wow! You're really quick. Just came back for 2 days, then you have uploaded 2 blog entries. I'm not even start writing mine.

SML, i don't like the "culture" in Bali that there are a lot people selling things at the beach. spoil the view.

I ate satay babi at Warung Made. It's quite nice.

Kai, still little plan la. Coz need to arrange accommodation and transport. Also to slot in special activities.

Wooi Yee, wait to see yours! :P

SML said...

ya, i agreed that, i even saw ppl selling blanket at the beach!! when peak season the beach is just more like small pasar malam....

i ate the otak-otak satay, very special..yumm.

This can be a good reference if I want to go to Bali next time :) Ei, that sarong you wore is really nice ler...

haan said...

SML, unfortunately, i didn't see and taste any otak-otak satay. i truly dislike the "beach style" in Indonesia. I've visited a few, all the same style. now also not having much interests with their beach already.

Kun, thanks for your kind compliment. That photo, I think is because of the colour of the Sarong :)

Hi, im going Bali this Sunday, just wonder you book the transport before you go or book when you arrived there?
Do you guys have to give extra TIPS for the driver?
We have very bad tour guide experience last time, just don't want to have some problem this time.
Thanks

haan said...

SML, I got the contacts at the airport, and booked after consideration. You can try to call the above shown numbers. They are the cheapest I could find (USD 25).

No extra tips to him. But if they really do a good job, and you don't mind, why not? both parties happy :P

Another option is to contact Putu, the commentator above. He could recommend you some good ones. You can try browsing through his blog and get his number.

Hope these info help! Enjoy your trip!

SML said...

WH, thanks for your fast reply..Hehe, will try to email him..
We were forced to pay tips to the tour guide last time...isk....
