Bebek Bengil, Ubud

Bebek means duck. In Malaysia, the Malay word of duck is "itik".

Bebek Bengil, means "Dirty Duck" in Indonesia. This is how they named this restaurant:

When we were building the restaurant, we thought long and hard about a name. Many good suggestions came from our friends, but none seemed just right.

We knew we wanted a Balinese name that translated well into English. However, for a long time the metaphor eluded us.

One tropical monsoon morning, when the restaurant was very close to being finished (we had the concrete floor down, and the tables in), a flock of ducks from the rice field crossed the road (yes, there were rice fields all around us then), ran quacking and squawking into the restaurant and across the floor and tables. They left muddy webbed footprints all over the place. They were our first guests - those dirty ducks!

Before we reached Ubud, we already got to know, there is something called Bebek Bengil, which is a very famous food. The driver, Nyoman, also described it to us, about the portion and the price. However, we still didn't have a clear picture, before really seeing it with own eyes.

Therefore, after checking-in to Dewi Ayu, we walked to the Dirty Duck Diner for dinner. The environment there was pretty nice.

I'm not supposed to eat duck, coz from Chinese's perception, it's something "poisonous", and as you know, once eating the wrong thing, I'd easily suffer from skin itchiness.

However, there is no point for me to say NOT TO GO, coz I had 2 other travel mates. I also felt curious and wished to try a little, but for sure not to eat a lot.

Three glasses of drinks for three of us.

This is the mixed rice, Nasi Campur. Ate this always in Indonesia!

This is the Bebek Bengil Crispy Duck - half a duck steamed in Indonesian spices and then fried for a crispy finish. You could choose between (1) sauteed potatoes and a side salad or (2) steamed rice and Indonesian vegetables.

Obviously, we went for option (2). Tell you, these chillies are so yummy!!!

The duck is actually not too much, but is truly crispy.

But it's okay. I took a little, and both of them finished the rest.

The bill. We spent almost USD 14 for the dinner. Satisfied with that.

When you walk into the restaurant, apart from the food, take a look at its environment. At night, you might see less. You can re-visit during the day. There are beautiful paddy fields.

Yes, you may say, there are also scenic views of paddy fields in my hometown. But that does not mean, I cannot see and like the paddy fields at other places :P

There are also several stone carvings decorating the lanes within the restaurant. Not sharing too many photos here, else this post will be very lengthy :P

Okay, hope you enjoy your meal at Bebek Bengil too.

But you know, after the meal, I fell sick that night. It was not related to the meal. It was because, I drank too little water throughout the day!

SML, my spicy quota is very low only... coz the doctor asked me not to eat too much spicy.. so now what people feel not hot enough, for me is very hot already :$

if got the chance to go again, will try their roasted pork ribs. bebek is the main selling point, therefore we ordered that :)
