Summary of May 2009 Bali Trip

This is always what I wish to do - summarize the posts I wrote as a result of a trip. Because that means, I've accomplished another project for myself!

A lot people may think, why do I have to torture myself for doing so?? Just finish the trip, upload the photos to share with friends, then everything is done, right?

Am not sure how you view this - silly, getting unnecessary load to myself, or... ambitious???

Hahaha, the word AMBITIOUS could sound a little too serious :P

This Bali trip was just 1 week. I finish writing everything only after approximately 3 months!! Anyway, my principle is always "not to sacrifice quality due to quantity or speed". Also, when putting myself in the shoes as a reader, if I keep writing the same topic/place continuously, it could be quite boring.

One week could be too long for Bali. Normally people go there for a maximum of 5 days 4 nights. As mentioned before, originally I'd like to dive at Tulamben (there is world class shipwreck), so another 2D1N were allocated for that. Who knows, at last I fell sick and canceled the plan.

I dare not dive when I was sick... I don't want to die in the sea :)

I started to seriously write about my trips since my backpack around China, Hong Kong and Macau in Jul-Aug 2007. The trip lasted for 1 month. Before I began, I was hesitated if I had the determination to complete it, coz I knew, the time to write would for sure longer than the trip itself.

"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination."

If you know me well enough, you'd know, I've pretty strong determination in doing things. This is a strength I'm pretty proud of.

Due to the fact that I always do research myself prior to going for a trip, I could roughly judge, what a person would like to know at that stage, in order to help him/her plan a good itinerary (ok, I know some people do not like to plan), to prepare how much money to bring along, or to get rid of one's worry before the visit.

I hope my guesses so far are not too wrong. If they are, please let me know, so I can improve, and write more helpful stuff.

I do all these for own fun, with a hope to encourage backpack travels, and to share all the normal and abnormal experiences encountered. I get no monetary reward. However, when someone leaves me a question, or a small appreciation note saying the info is useful, that is more than enough to make me happy :)

This round, it's just-in-time to finish up this project, before I start my new journey. In summary, the posts are categorized as follows:

General:
Food-Related:
Accommodation:
Tourism Attractions:
Other Activities:
Misc:
I've been curious and eager to visit Bali many years ago. I always thought, Bali would be the first place in Indonesia that I visit. End up, I went to Jakarta, Bandung, Anyer before Bali :)

Anyway, it's better late than never.

Bali is definitely quite different from the other areas in Indonesia. In Bali, you can easily know where one is ranked in a family, via his/her name. It goes like this:

Wayan -> Made -> Nyoman -> Ketut -> repeat the flow (ie Wayan) -> Made -> etc

So for example, when you meet someone called Ketut, you will know he/she is either the 4th or 8th kid in his/her family.

If you are going to travel by public transports in Bali, these are the price I saw in Ubud to several places. Please note that these prices are as of May 2009.

If you ask me, where is the place in Bali that I love the most, I'd say, it's UBUD.

I do not like Kuta coz of the bad experiences with the money changers there. I feel, you should be honest and trustable, so there will be more tourists coming to you in the future.

It's not to get small profits by cheating people in currency exchanges, but then getting a bad name for yourself. I think this is the reason some places/countries could hardly improve.

Although you say "The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination.", there is still quite impossible to please everybody on earth.

So sometime have to just ignore what others think and stick to what we think is right.

Regarding those money changers, I think they are at the level of 小聰明, but lack of 大智慧. Or pressure of life make them focus on small money in short term, instead of reputation in long term.

I'm just curious... if everyone in Bali is named according to their ranking in the family, that means there are a lot of Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut there? Those are just the names available in Bali?

i dun plan or wish to please everybody also... coz i won't please those people i feel not worth, and i do not like :)

"pressure of life" is always a good excuse :P

kun, these 4 are not "just the names available in Bali".. u can name yourself with other words.

if memory serves me right, "putu" is also used for the 1st kid.

yes, there are a lot of Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut there... even in a family, if there have 6 kids and they follow this "rule", there will be 2xWayan and 2xMade.
